This week, I thought I’d write about disappointing products. Most of these products are “okay” in terms of price and quality and might be just what someone else is looking for. They simply did not suit my own personal preferences. However, there is one product in this bunch that I do think is defective.
First up is Tatcha The Silk Canvas, a face primer with a putty consistency. This product is meant to be applied before any other makeup and is supposed to blur your pores and help your makeup last longer. The Silk Canvas is an expensive product, and I bought it before the less expensive mini size became available! I don’t notice any difference in the appearance or lasting power of my foundation makeup. It doesn’t seem to make it worse but doesn’t make it better, either. An expensive mistake and a reminder not to fall for all the hype.
The second product is the Colourpop Clay It Cool palette. I reviewed this last week, so you can check out that review here if you would like. It is a good quality palette but just too warm for my liking.
Nyx Thick It Stick It! is third up on my list of disappointments. This is one that I will continue to use, but it is just not as good as the Elf Wow Brow Gel. The Nyx is a slightly odd shade in my opinion, almost a little greenish, and looks a little clumpy or uneven in my brows. The only reason I wanted to try the Nyx is that it is advertised to have very strong hold, and the Elf product that I usually use has weak hold. But the Elf looks more natural, and in future I will repurchase that one after I have used up the Nyx.
The fourth product is Elf Luminous Putty Blush in the shade "Maui." Now the color of this blush is gorgeous, a light pink with a soft, shiny finish. Because of the color alone, I am motivated to find a way to make it work. It has that “glowy” finish which is quite pretty, but there are glitter particles embedded throughout the formula! You can see individual pieces of glitter on your cheeks. The pieces are small and probably not that noticeable to others from a normal distance, but it just looks weird to me and I know it’s there.
The fifth and final product is. Colourpop Color Stix in “Day Date.” This is the one that is downright defective. Colourpop describes it as a “creamy, multi-tasking eyeshadow in a stick.” Well, this eyeshadow is the furthest from “creamy” that you can get! It scratches against your eyelid, and the color, described as a “matte, rosy pink,” barely shows up. I have to scrape it across my skin multiple times to get any color. It definitely would not show up as just an eyeliner. I was expecting it to be much creamier in texture and opaque enough to really show up.
If if I had to rank these disappointing products in order of most to least disappointing, it would go:
- Tatcha The Silk Canvas (too expensive for what it is).
- Colourpop Color Stix (defective).
- Colourpop Clay It Cool palette (colors don’t suit me).
- Elf Luminous Putty Blush (visible pieces of glitter).
- Nyx Thick It Stick It! (looks patchy but still usable).
It is so much fun to try out new products, but writing this post helped remind me not to believe all the marketing claims and, when I’m feeling tempted by the latest and greatest thing, to take a step back and think about whether I already have a similar product that does the same thing and that I already love.
Thanks for reading!
